Prepair for winter on a Bum's Budget!

A year ago everyone would call this Cheap even Hillbilly or Trailer Fix Now its Economically Correct! So save some Cash Fuel and some sanity!

Things You'll Need

Caulk, Nails, Blue masking tape, Glass Cleaner, Large trash bags,

Steps

Step One

With pencil or pen make a list of what you do and check things off as they get done also make special notes why a piece of tape has been placed over area to fix if other than caulk.I usually put note on tape. Now Clean Clean Clean Why simple if nothing else it makes your home look good. But fact is for that cheap stuff like caulk to work you have to have a clean surface Plus while you are cleaning and this goes with your Blue masking tape you mark spots that need attention. The blue stuff is the non stick painters use so you don't ruin the surface just protect or mark. Now after you have the place clean washed rinsed just like you would your car do the windows with no streak window cleaner I will explain this later. OK you keep saying I should of paid someone for this but NO because they don't own it or live in it and pay the bills and the reason behind this is multi level Fix this stuff right and you save energy cash Fix it your are not out spending cash and using fuel Fix this you get some well needed exercise and the self satisfaction you did it which creates a good frame of mind thus you sanity is better than when you started!!!

Step Two

Now the home is clean lets get to the garage if you have one WHY just maybe you can park a car in it for the bad weather and save cash on damage to that or you trying to clean it each time it gets bad outside. Now finally the Yard and put all the leaves and stuff in the plastic bags you will use them later. Now by this point you might have spent a few days or nights and say enough but look at how much you have saved and learned.

Step Three

Now the Fix ups and this is fairly easy first caulk every place you marked with the tape should have reason for tape and most will be caulk Cheap and best way to seal out the cold, by the way you do Not need that $5 a tube stuff just simple latex caulk goes on easy wipes clean with your finger and cleans up with water see most of us are not very good caulkers even me a carpenter by trade its just something thats usually a mess and the expensive kind has silicone or oil base very hard clean up get it? Just a thought but you don't have to do is get some paint and go over the places you have caulked. Now as you are caulking look for stuff thats loose thats what the nails are for nail anything down that needs it this tightens things up so drafts cant get in.

Step Four

OK now your back to clean and sealed good your already saving cash and fuel but what about those bags of leaves and yard stuff well stack them around the house wont look good but you will never see once covered by snow and the insulating value added to one of the most accessible places for air to get in is covered at a cost of $0. Now the windows why the big deal about cleaning simple sunshine can get in and you can look out which means you are doing something but watching the tube all winter.
You have spent a Bum's Budget probably less than a trip to a fast food place, you know everything was attended too unless you got lazy, and you have the self satisfaction you did it saved some cash and will save more all winter plus some well needed exercise.

Ask Anyone for Anything Have the need to Know it Pays

The most important way to get ahead in life and in business is Knowledge. Do not be afraid to ask if you do not know and want to you will not look stupid but just the opposite People who have the need to know and learn always have the respect of others for trying to better their selves. So follow me and I will ask for your help but also lend you some ways to get help that can make you succeed!

Yes I can use your help I always need assistance and I am not afraid to Ask. This world is much to complicated for one person to handle even if you moved into the mountains and became a complete recluse sooner or later you would need someones help or at least advice. I have a project that I am currently working on like over 6 months and the documents emails websites and phone calls I have made in a quest to get it going and this information is growing on a Daily basis. Probably one of the most important tools you have for gaining knowledge these days is the INTERNET and these tools you can save they for the most part cost nothing. Lets remember you have the computer you are on the net or you would not be reading this. Now if you have read my background you will see I have been the the building and real Estate industry all my adult life and grew up in that industry. So lets look at a real simple way to get some info you are building a small project anything lets say dog house, you have no clue where to start or if you should even do this. What to do you do a search on the net for dog house comes up with millions of sites and ways to spend allot of cash! Titles like dog house for dummies Building dog houses simplified and on well by the time you read even one of those you are in the same place you started No Dog House and not even a clue if you will build one yourself. but by the time you buy the book look at several websites with thousands of pages register to win one sign up for dog house weekly you are overwhelmed with information and still Know Nothing!!! that might tell you yourself if this is for me.

Now if I was to answer the call this is how it might go You ask first how much I ask how big what kind any ideas You say No then you ask is it a hard costly project or could I DIY do it yourself I say Well you need a plan Costs You need Tools Costs Lots you need time Costs You need experience or have some ability to do work like this do you think you have that see this is where the friend or retaliative come in handy they know you!!! Now see in less than ten minutes I gave you more information than you could of found in a day on the net and Why? Survivie Winter and Holiday's on a Bum's Budget!

The coming winter of 2008-2009 will test ALL!!! The bad economy means one thing you have to be resourcefully some things will be easy some you will have to just grin and bare. Being a Baby Boomer like me Helps most of us came from large family's and did not have a lot of cash but had the survival methods used and passed down just like the clothing! So bad times are sometimes the best why? Well in the effort to stretch the buck and stay warm we have a habit of coming closer together which can in turn make for a Winter and Especially a Holiday Season that will not be forgot for a long time all done on the budget of a BUM even though we are just normal people trying to survive a economy we did not plan for.

The first thing everyone thinks of is the COLD and although many articles have been wrote about the subject well yes the most important thing is what you wear. When we were kids this was not a fashion statement it was what was passed down! These days with smaller families and more recycling the pass me down effect does not happen as much. Fact is quiet a few just did not have to worry about it but This Year things are a changing! So first thing and we all know how to do it be resourcefully use common sense think about needs not just for today but for the upcoming season.
Believe it or not make a list you are going to do it anyway for the Holidays so incorporate it two columns One Holiday needs and One winter needs you are going to find allot of things end up on both lists but thats OK makes them have a priority.Now here is a Very important part that most will not do and most will not like its "A BUDGET" for you! If you want to save and be nice and warm this season with a cost you can live with Do This and write it down start with a basic list and like the holidays add things as you think of them. I have a small tape recorder when I think of something I just like work record it for later then I always write it down.
Now before we talk where and why we want to shop, dress, eat and maybe even act like a poor destitute BUM lets get into why we should and these reasons are not selfish and Hopefully not needed but maybe we should implement them into our lives anyway. The reason for bum Budget is everyone even the rich and famous are feeling the pinch of a economy we are not sure of it changes and challenges All of us everyday Thats Fact. Even if the fuel price has come down we are still remembering what it was and we know we have to conserve not just because of cost but for our environment and to lesson our needs of foreign energy OIL! So making a budget like this helps ALL not just you even if this list doesn't save you a dime from last year you did have to sit down and Think about it and thats a start so do it.
Now lets go Shopping and remember that famous line "Shop till you Drop" well do it but with these things in mind: Walk don't drive unless you have too its good for your health and saves fuel and the environment so simple yet so important. Skip all the stops for food you know what I mean just don't buy what you want make it at home again Health. Use shopping sense you know whats on that budget list so you know what to stay away from. Stop take a break talk to people why well everyone is in basically the same boat so get some new ideas where to buy where to go shop for better deals its social interacting and helps what Health. Now you are doing some healthy things with that list make your family do them to its good for ALL a healthy society becomes a stronger one.
OK we are now getting some healthy ideas and its good for mind and body Now the old wallet. We need clothing first hand me downs call friends and relatives you know who grew out of what and its not begging this year its called conserving remember that. Go to the thrift stores and I mean thrift GoodWill Salvation Army Church second hand stores. Stay away from franchise type second hand stores that do not contribute what they make back to people that need it. If you do go to one of those stores you probably will find if you compare you can buy new for less its just they give you the hype about what a good thing you are doing. Now when you looking for clothing get that list out you can find things that are Great as gifts for the Holidays in these places. In fact most items are donated and you will find one of a kind gifts which really make you look good and feel good when you give them. Remember its the thought!
I hope you are on your way to saving some cash making your health a little better and doing some things that help ALL! Lets do this Walk don't drive.Buy from those who give back to the community. Use things that can be recycled that includes clothing holiday gift wrap fake holiday trees. No Burning stay away from that fireplace unless you use it for heat. Stay at home for the Holidays save that energy save that environment but most of all save yourself some of that hard earned cash. You will learn some good lessons and have some fun doing it. Living large on a Bum's Budget!

Now as in past Bum budget articles we will describe how to live on a budget that may not be what you are used to but have to in order to survive. If you stick with this you may just find you where missing out on some things that other people not as fortunate did and enjoyed all the time. This is all simple common sense use it or don't but read it and try you might like it. We sometimes in life find out we are our own worst enemy's and by changing some bad habits relaxing just a bit smell the roses instead of sell them things might be better for ALL. You are not alone in this New American Mess and for the most part did not contribute to it but will like ALL have to learn to live with it.A Bum is a symbol from past bad times but reflects some things we will have to deal with so hope you like the Bum Articles. Number one on the list hate to say it but we need to think about Energy this has allot to do with our current crisis. what are you driving and how much do you drive cut this by a third you will save on a average $20-$150 per week thats some cash and think of the oil not bought from others that don't even like us.
Number One Now lets look at what you drive how many cars you have and what can be done if anything but if you can just cut back on the average weekly drive your ahead of the game. Always keep your vehicle in good working order change oil tune up keep tires inflated and rotate in a normal basis this all save fuel.Maybe think about trading for a better fuel efficient car I know you don't want to but may be best choice if you drive allot. Now here is the big one and Nobody likes it Share a ride Yes this alone saves more fuel per work week than any other thing out there except public transportation and sometimes even cost less than public transportation does but you will be put into a situation that causes all of us to be irritable see we are a selfish society and like our privacy.

Number two on our list still has to do with energy again but you can save and you can Help the environment at the same time. Remember anytime we save Fuel of any kind we save on the damages that those fuels do to the world we live in and the air we breath. So lets start with lights camera and action What? Turn Off lights and unplug stuff you are not using why unplug well we live in a tech world and even if something is not plugged in still is using power not enough to worry about as one item but add up the hundreds you have and use its big Bucks. Now camera take pictures they are cheap a good way to start a conversation but wait we have legal documents for hardly nothing and proof of anything we have and how it looked,more on this later edition. Now Action yes take any new steps that you can find to generate and save on fuel for every drop we can save its one we don't buy from others.
Number three Creature Comforts what we really can get rid of if we just make up our minds! This includes what we eat also but believe it or not some luxury things do save Lets look at that BBQ Grill runs on propane thats good charcoal not so good. That laptop battery powered does not need constant power source. That big warm comforter Use it turn down that thermostat. Now food the big cost usually is for that big steak that your heart doesn't need cut back on stuff eat more fruit Cook fish on that Grill its Great You eat good you save Energy and Cash! It costs less to feed you and you have more energy plus look better healthy people always do.

But for now you have a start Guess what materialistically you Look no different but you have started to save some needed cash and physically you will start to look better you will be healthier so people are really going to start thinking you are Living Large when you are living on what we are calling a Bums Budget.
